This process was repeated until all 29 ribs were completed. After this I stitched on all 116 semicircles followed by a 15 cm loop of Amsteel Blue polypropylene cord (break strength: 1133 kilos) to complete the load triangles. It is important to sew the leading edge semicircle 12mm from the edge of the rib so that it doesn't get in the way when the ribs and panels are sewn together |

Load triangle strength testing:
This week i cut all the ribs out of the ripstop. I also went to the sailmaking store to get more reinforcement fabric and 69 weight thread. The next step is to cut out the reinforcements with a hot knife and reinforce all of the load triangles with ribbon and semicircles.
While I was gone my para-glider fabric came in the mail. I also spent some of the time before and after our trip finishing up my plans and cutting out the polyester reinforcements (for leading/trailing edges and load triangles). I also cut some small
1 cm strips of the rip stop and did some preliminary break strength testing. I will be doing more precise tests but for now the material appears to live up to its description. It is very strong and very light, the PU coating allows no air to breathe through the fabric. Next week my work load will be very big, I want to cut out at least half of the ribs by Thursday. I hope to finish all the ribs by the following week and begin sewing. Load triangle reinforcements:This week I found the material I want to use for the load triangle reinforcement. I figured out how and drew up a detailed plan for the assembly of the load triangle.
A sail repair shop had a thick weave polyester 60 gram per meter sailcloth I needed. In order to keep the edges of the reinforcement from fraying I decided to cut the shapes out with a hot knife. I used a modified soldering iron to cut out a few arcs and circles for strength testing. The reinforcement turned out to be more than strong enough. Step 1: Pattern
What gives you purpose in life? Why?:
I feel the most purposeful or useful when i have a piece of knowledge that someone else can use. I feel this when I can teach people about stars and constellation, rocketry, and craftsmanship in general. Most recently i felt useful when I thought of and produced a mini rocker motor making a tool that helped develop a teacher's curriculum. What did you learn about electromagnetism? What questions do you have?: This week I have learned how a ccd sensor works. I am still trying to figure out how the red green blue filter produces a color image. Outside the Lens: At outside the lens one of the most useful things i learned was how to frame an image properly. Before the class i never realized that the way you framed a picture of a road or any scene could change the way you feel emotionally. |
